Michael's Bio

Michael Kenneth Williams will begin filming his signature role of "Omar" in the fifth season of HBO's Critically-acclaimed Series "The Wire" this spring.

Michael was born in Brooklyn, New York and began his career as a performer by dancing professionally at age 22. He quickly developed a reputation for original and innovative choreography. After numerous appearances in music videos, Michael decided to seriously pursue acting by studying theatre. He participated in several productions of the La' MaMA Theatre Company in New York and the prestigious National Black Theatre Company.

Williams made his feature film debut in the urban drama BULLET, after being discovered by the late TuPac Shakur, who wanted Michael to play his little brother. Michael then drew the attention of Martin Scorsese who directed him in BRINGING OUT THE DEAD, opposite Nicolas Cage. His subsequent film work includes, lead roles in independent films such as BROKEN EVEN and MUG SHOT. Michael's television credits include multiple episodes of LAW & ORDER, THIRD WATCH and a recurring role on HBO's THE SOPRANOS.

Michael Williams is now seen as the breakout actor on HBO's hit series, "THE WIRE." He was singled out for Great Performance of the Year, in Entertainment Weekly's Best of 2002 Issue, for his portrayal of the controversial and multifaceted "Omar." Michael just wrapped work on Ben Affleck's GONE BABY GONE, which also stars Ed Harris and Morgan Freeman. He currently has a recurring role on the new ABC series, Six Degrees, created by JJ Abrams (Lost, Alias).
